KLM's carry-on limit in Economy is 55 × 35 × 25 cm (21.7 × 13.8 × 9.8 in) including handles and wheels, plus a small bag of 40 × 30 × 15 cm (15.7 × 11.8 × 5.9 in) under the seat. The combined weight of both bags is capped at 12 kg (26.5 lb). The cheapest fare, Economy Basic, does not include the larger bag.

Those figures come from KLM's hand baggage allowance and ticket options pages and match the limits in NewCarryOn's airline database, last checked October 12, 2026. KLM states that the exact allowance on your flight depends on your cabin and ticket type, so the booking confirmation is the final word.

KLM hand baggage allowance by fare

Fare Small bag (under seat) Hand bag (overhead) Combined weight
Economy Basic 1 piece, 40 × 30 × 15 cm Not included, one can be bought as an add-on 12 kg (26.5 lb)
Economy Light, Standard, Flex 1 piece, 40 × 30 × 15 cm 1 piece, 55 × 35 × 25 cm 12 kg (26.5 lb)
Business 1 piece, 40 × 30 × 15 cm Up to 2 pieces, 55 × 35 × 25 cm 18 kg (39.7 lb)

Two points in this table need a caveat. KLM's pages describe the Business allowance in slightly different ways, with one page referring to a hand bag and another to two hand bags, so confirm the number of pieces in your booking. And the Basic add-on is sold under conditions: KLM's terms allow one hand baggage option per ticket on eligible flights, and Flying Blue Ultimate, Platinum and Gold members with a Basic ticket get one hand bag free on flights operated by KLM and Air France.

Handles and wheels count

KLM says to include handles and wheels when you measure. That matters because a bag's listed size is often the shell only. A carry-on listed as 21 inches tall can measure 23 inches with the wheels and the handle in place.

Measure from the floor to the top of the closed bag, then width and depth at the widest point, including any side pockets that bulge. If the bag is expandable, measure it unexpanded.

Does a standard US carry-on fit KLM?

A bag sold as 22 × 14 × 9 in is 55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9 cm. Against KLM's 55 × 35 × 25 cm limit, that bag is 0.9 cm too tall and 0.6 cm too wide, and it fits easily in depth. Both overages are under one centimeter, but the numbers are measured to the limit, and a full bag with soft sides tends to bulge.

In practice:

  • A soft-sided 22 × 14 × 9 in bag can be compressed to fit.
  • A hard-shell bag has no give, and a hardcase at the full 22 inches will exceed the height limit by almost a centimeter.
  • A 21-inch bag has room to spare in every dimension.

Our carry-on size chart by airline lists the common US limits for comparison. If you want to test a specific bag, the size checker compares it to each airline limit, including the KLM entry.

The 12 kg limit includes your small bag

This is the part most travelers miss. The 12 kg (26.5 lb) cap is the combined weight of the small bag and the hand bag in Economy. A laptop bag at 3 kg and a hardshell carry-on that weighs 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) empty leaves 5.6 kg (12.3 lb) for everything you put inside. That is a workable weight for a few days of clothes. It is not enough for a week of shoes and a second pair of jeans.

KLM publishes the weight limit, so assume it can be checked at check-in or at the gate. A lighter bag is the simplest way to stay under it.

What the small bag can be

The small bag is a separate item from your hand bag. It has to fit under the seat in front of you, and KLM's limit is 40 × 30 × 15 cm. That fits a slim backpack or a laptop bag, and it does not fit a full-size weekender or a gym duffel. If you are not sure whether your bag fits, our guide to carry-on vs personal item covers how the two categories differ.

What to do if your bag is over the limit

On an Economy Basic ticket, KLM sells a Hand Baggage Option for eligible flights, and the price depends on the route, so look it up for your flight on KLM's site before you get to the airport. If the bag is only over on weight, move items into the small bag or wear the heaviest ones. If it is over on size, checking it is the remaining option.
