Turkish Airlines allows one cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 9.1 in) and 8 kg (17.6 lb) in Economy, plus a personal item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm (15.7 × 11.8 × 5.9 in) and 4 kg (8.8 lb). Business Class passengers can take two cabin bags of the same size, each up to 8 kg, for 16 kg in total, plus the personal item.
These figures come from Turkish Airlines' cabin baggage page and match the limits in NewCarryOn's airline database, last checked October 12, 2026. The weight is the limit that catches people. The size limit is generous.

Turkish Airlines publishes country versions of its baggage pages, so check the one for your market and your booking, because a fare or route can change the allowance.
Does a standard US carry-on fit?
A bag sold as 22 × 14 × 9 in is 55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9 cm. Against Turkish Airlines' 55 × 40 × 23 cm limit, the width has 4.4 cm to spare and the depth fits by 0.1 cm. The height is 0.9 cm over the limit.
The tight dimension is height, and a bag with wheels and a handle at the full 22 inches is the one most likely to be questioned. A 21-inch carry-on clears every dimension with room to spare. Our carry-on size chart by airline shows how the 22 × 14 × 9 inch standard compares across US carriers.

The 8 kg limit is the real constraint
Eight kilograms is 17.6 lb, and the bag itself counts. Take a hardside carry-on that weighs 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) empty as an example. That leaves 4.6 kg (10.1 lb) for contents. A pair of shoes, a few shirts and a toiletry bag will use most of that.
This is a tighter limit than KLM's 12 kg combined, which we cover in our KLM carry-on size guide. It is also far tighter than US domestic airlines, which generally publish no carry-on weight limit.
Three ways to stay under it:
- Pick a lighter bag. The difference between a 3.4 kg and a 2.5 kg carry-on is 0.9 kg, which is a pair of jeans.
- Move heavy items to the personal item. The personal item has its own 4 kg limit, which is separate from the 8 kg.
- Wear the heavy things. Boots, a jacket and a laptop in a coat pocket do not go on the scale.
What counts as a personal item
The personal item is 40 × 30 × 15 cm and has to fit under the seat in front of you. That is a slim backpack or a small tote. A laptop bag at that size works, a full-size backpack does not, and neither does a weekender. It is also smaller than American's personal item limit of 18 × 14 × 8 in (45.7 × 35.6 × 20.3 cm), so a bag that works as a personal item on an American flight may not fit here. The carry-on vs personal item guide covers the difference.

What to do if your bag is over the limit
If your bag is over the size or weight limit, you can pay to check it or reduce the load. Turkish Airlines sets excess baggage fees by route, so look up the price on its website for your flight before you get to the airport. If your trip includes a connection on another airline, check that airline's limit as well, because each carrier sets its own.
You can test the dimensions of any bag against Turkish Airlines on the size checker, and the airline's page in our database is at Turkish Airlines.
