Yes, you can bring a razor on a plane, but the answer depends on the razor. Disposable razors and electric razors are allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. Loose razor blades that are not inside a cartridge are not allowed in a carry-on and have to go in checked luggage.

The TSA's own "What Can I Bring?" pages, last reviewed for this article on October 12, 2026, split razors into three entries. The table below shows what each one says.

TSA razor rules at a glance

Razor type Carry-on Checked bag What TSA says
Disposable razor Yes Yes Any sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped
Electric razor Yes Yes TSA refers questions to the FAA website
Razor-type blades (not in a cartridge) No Yes Box cutters and razor blades not in a cartridge are prohibited in carry-on

Two details in that table matter more than they look. First, the TSA entry for loose blades carves out blades "in a cartridge", which is how a standard cartridge razor with a plastic head ends up treated like a disposable. Second, the entries for disposable razors and razor-type blades were last updated in 2017, so they predate the current screening procedures. The electric razor entry was updated July 14, 2026.

Disposable and cartridge razors: carry-on is fine

A disposable razor, or a cartridge razor where the blades sit inside a plastic head, goes through security in your carry-on without any special handling. You do not need to remove it from your toiletry bag, and it does not count against any liquid limit.

The honest caveat is that TSA says the final decision rests with the officer at the checkpoint. A disposable razor is listed as allowed, so refusals are uncommon, but the officer has the last word.

If you pack razor cartridges as refills, keep them in their original packaging. That keeps the blades enclosed and separate from the rest of your bag.

Safety razors and straight razors: the gray area

A traditional double-edge safety razor holds a loose blade that you load yourself. A straight razor has an exposed blade. TSA's list does not have a separate entry for either one that I could find, so the razor-type blades rule is the closest match: blades not in a cartridge are prohibited in carry-on.

That is our reading of the rule, not a quote from TSA. The practical choices are:

  • Pack it in your checked bag. A safety razor or straight razor, and any spare blades, can go in checked luggage if the blade is sheathed or securely wrapped, as TSA requires for all sharp objects.
  • Carry a cartridge or disposable razor instead. For a carry-on-only trip, this is the option that avoids a conversation at the checkpoint.
  • Do not count on a safety razor passing. Some travelers get through with the blade installed and some do not. It depends on the officer, and you have no appeal at the checkpoint.

If you travel carry-on only and you shave with a safety razor, bring a cheap disposable as a backup so a confiscated razor does not cost you a clean shave on arrival.

Electric razors and trimmers

Electric razors are allowed in carry-on and checked bags. Pack the razor with its travel lock on, or in its case, so it cannot switch on in the bag. Electric shavers run on rechargeable batteries, so battery rules apply as well. Our guide to liquids, batteries and other carry-on items under TSA rules covers lithium batteries and spare power banks.

Shaving cream and aftershave: this is the liquid rule

The razor is rarely the problem at security. The shaving cream is. TSA lists aerosol shaving cream as allowed in a carry-on only in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, which means it has to fit in your single quart-sized bag with the rest of your liquids.

In a checked bag, the FAA limits the total of toiletries and aerosols to 2 kg (70 oz) or 2 L (68 fl oz) per person, and each container cannot exceed 0.5 kg (18 oz) or 500 ml (17 fl oz). A normal can of shaving foam fits inside those limits.

The liquids rule has its own set of exceptions and edge cases, so the guide linked above is the better place to read about it. This article only covers the blades.

How to pack a razor so it is not an issue

  1. Carry-on: a disposable razor or cartridge razor in the toiletry bag, with the blade cover on.
  2. Checked bag: safety razors, straight razors and loose blades, wrapped in a sock or a blade case, in the middle of the bag and not on the outside edge.
  3. Toiletry bag position: keep it at the top of your bag, so that if an officer needs to look at it, you can take it out in a few seconds. A toiletry bag is part of your bag allowance, so check whether it still fits as a personal item or carry-on once it is full.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a disposable razor in a carry-on? Yes. TSA lists a disposable razor as allowed in both carry-on and checked bags.

Can I bring razor blades on a plane? Only in checked baggage. TSA prohibits razor blades that are not in a cartridge in carry-on bags, and asks that sharp objects in checked bags be sheathed or securely wrapped.

Can I bring an electric razor on a plane? Yes, in carry-on or checked bags.

Do rules differ outside the US? Yes. TSA rules apply to screening at US airports. Other countries and airports run their own security rules, so check the security authority of your departure airport before you fly.

Last checked against TSA's What Can I Bring? pages on October 12, 2026. TSA can change a rule without notice, and the officer at the checkpoint makes the final decision.
